Brad Kinder
Licensed Professional Counselor
Brad Kinder is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and founding owner of Healing Waters Counseling Center (HWCC). He established HWCC in 2010 following several years of service in community mental health and with the Virginia Department of Corrections. Mr. Kinder is a licensed professional counselor, certified substance abuse counselor, and approved clinical supervisor through the Virginia Board of Counseling. In addition, he is recognized as a supervised psychologist by the West Virginia Board of Examiners of Psychologists.
Mr. Kinder began his career in 2004 after earning a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology from Bluefield College. In 2007, he received a Master of Science in Human Services from Capella University, followed by 30 additional graduate credits in Professional Counseling from Liberty University in 2008. He also holds an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing from Southwest Virginia Community College, which he completed in 2018. Currently a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology, Mr. Kinder is pursuing a specialization in forensic psychology and has a professional interest in neurodevelopmental assessment. His doctoral dissertation focuses on developing a therapy program for individuals experiencing mental health symptoms related to coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (black lung disease).
Guided by a faith-based perspective, Mr. Kinder utilizes a biopsychosocial spiritual model to address the complex factors affecting mental health. He draws on a cognitive-behavioral therapy framework, particularly Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy and Reality Therapy. His clinical perspective suggests that most psychological disorders result from both genetic and environmental influences, with genetics playing a predominant role. As a believer with a reformed soteriology, Mr. Kinder maintains that humanity’s sinful nature ultimately overshadows environmental and genetic factors. While recognizing the importance of examining genetics and the environment individually, he contends that both ultimately point to the concept of sin and the total depravity of mankind.
Mr. Kinder enjoys spending time with his wife, daughter, family, and friends. He has two miniature schnauzer dogs who are his sidekicks. Mr. Kinder is a licensed private pilot and enjoys flying in the Appalachian Mountains and the low country of South Carolina. He is an avid music lover and is the self-proclaimed number-one fan of the classic rock band Journey. Mr. Kinder loves anything related to baseball and previously played the sport from elementary school through college. He is a lifelong fan of the Major League Baseball team, the Baltimore Orioles. Mr. Kinder is actively engaged in his local congregation, which is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). Whether professionally or personally, Mr. Kinder’s goal is to bring glory to God in all that he does. He believes the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever!
