Understanding The Warning Signs Of Suicide

Talking about suicide isn’t easy, but it’s necessary. One of the most important ways we can prevent it is by recognizing the warning signs early on. At Healing Waters, we believe that education and awareness save lives, and knowing what to look for can make all the difference.

Recognize The Signs

We often hear that family and friends had no idea that someone was struggling until it was too late. Recognizing the signs early is key to getting someone the help they need. While everyone is different, there are a few signals that may indicate someone is struggling:

  • Changes in mood or behavior – If a person suddenly seems withdrawn, irritable, or hopeless, it may be a red flag.
  • Talking about death or feeling like a burden – Even casual statements like “What’s the point?” or “Everyone would be better off without me” should always be taken seriously.
  • Withdrawing from friends and activities – Pulling away from loved ones, hobbies, or responsibilities can signal inner pain.
  • Drastic changes in sleep or appetite – Sleeping too much, not enough, or experiencing sudden changes in eating habits may point to distress.
  • Risk-taking behavior – Increased use of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, or other dangerous actions can be warning signs that someone is struggling with their will to live.

Take Action

It’s important to remember that spotting a warning sign doesn’t mean you need to have all the answers. You don’t need to fix everything, you just need to show you care. If you notice these behaviors in a friend, family member, or even a coworker, reach out. A simple, “I’ve noticed you don’t seem like yourself – do you want to talk?” can open the door to life-saving conversations.

If you ever feel uncertain, don’t wait. Encourage the person to connect with a professional counselor or call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. Sometimes, offering to sit with someone while they make the call can help them feel less alone.

You Can Make A Difference

Suicide prevention starts with awareness. By paying attention to the warning signs and responding with compassion, we can help break the silence, support one another, and ultimately, save lives. We’re here to walk alongside you and your loved ones. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for more support.
